Our five-bedroom houses in the Durango area are far less alike than a shared bedroom count suggests. Aspen Grove is a 2,098-square-foot cabin on a wooded acre at Electra Lake that sleeps 14. Bends Whitewater Ranch is a 6,700-square-foot home on private Animas River frontage in Hermosa that sleeps 10. Hermosa Mountain Hideaway sits at 3,800 square feet and sleeps 12. Each of these homes has a private hot tub, and Hermosa Mountain Hideaway allows dogs. Pick your favorite below!

What to Know Before You Book a Five-Bedroom
-

Square Footage Does Not Track Headcount Aspen Grove is the most compact at 2,098 square feet and sleeps 14, while Bends Whitewater Ranch spreads across 6,700 square feet and sleeps 10. -

Our Five-Bedroom Houses, Side by Side
Aspen Grove is the most compact on paper and the biggest in headcount: 2,098 square feet, five bedrooms, three baths, and beds for 14. It sits on a wooded acre at Electra Lake with the Hermosa Cliffs in view — three stories, a wrap-around deck and a private hot tub — about 25 minutes north of town and five miles from the ski resort. Rates start at $395 a night, the lowest at this bedroom count, and it holds a straight 5 rating from 13 guests. Three bathrooms for 14 people is the trade-off to weigh.
Bends Whitewater Ranch goes the other way. It is 6,700 square feet — more than three times Aspen Grove — on private frontage on the Animas River in Hermosa, with a gourmet kitchen, a jacuzzi, a basketball court, a fire pit, and five bedrooms across three and a half baths. It sleeps 10 and the house rule holds it there, with no more than eight adults. Rates start at $675 and it carries a 4.93 from 28 reviews. There is a full walkthrough of Whitewater Ranch on the blog, and it sits alongside our luxury rentals in Durango and our other homes on the water.
Hermosa Mountain Hideaway lands in the middle on floor area at 3,800 square feet, five bedrooms, four baths and 12 guests — the most bathrooms at this bedroom count. It was recently remodeled, and it is the one with the putting green, the fitness room and air conditioning. It is also the five-bedroom house that takes a dog. The drive times from its door are short: ten minutes to historic downtown Durango, fifteen to Purgatory, five to the hot springs and five to golf at Dalton Ranch. From $500, rated 4.95 from 22 reviews.
Bends Whitewater Ranch and Hermosa Mountain Hideaway list mountain views, and each of these houses has a private hot tub, a ping pong table, a garage, a grill, a fireplace and a private yard. Choosing between them mostly comes down to headcount. Ten or fewer and any of them works, so pick on square footage and location. Eleven or twelve and it is Hermosa Mountain Hideaway. Thirteen or fourteen and it is Aspen Grove. More than fourteen and bedroom count stops being the useful filter — the six-bedroom houses sleep 14 to 20, and our large vacation rentals and family reunion rentals lists cut across bedroom counts entirely.

What You Can Reach From Hermosa and Electra Lake
These houses sit north of Durango rather than in town, and that shapes the week. Hermosa Mountain Hideaway is ten minutes from historic downtown and fifteen from Purgatory; Aspen Grove is about 25 minutes north of town and five miles from the resort. Purgatory runs 107 trails across 1,635 acres on 11 lifts, averages roughly 260 inches of snow, and its Power Kids program gives 12-and-unders free unlimited skiing with no blackout dates — which matters when you are filling a house with a dozen or more people.
Durango Hot Springs Resort and Spa is five minutes from the Hideaway, with around 32 mineral pools running 99 to 112°F, and the golf at Dalton Ranch is five minutes the other way. Bends Whitewater Ranch has its own frontage on the Animas River. If you plan to fish the Animas, the Gold Medal reach is a separate four miles from the Lightner Creek confluence to Rivera Crossing Bridge — flies and lures only, two trout, 16-inch minimum.
