Best place to stay. Our Host was great to communicate with prior to our stay answering all our questions in a timely manner. The condo far exceeded our expectations. It was well furnished with plenty of towels, cookware, extra refrigerator, a large washer and dryer, and all the amenities you could want. There were also lots of board games to keep our kids entertained as well as a swimming pool that was just a few steps away. I can't say enough about how great this condo and our Host was. Thank you so much for hosting us at Casa Norte. Our group of 10 found the house to be perfect for our needs. The layout is great for two families, allowing the kids to play upstairs while adults relax downstairs. The hot tub in the garage was a great addition to relax after a day on the slopes. The kitchen is well stocked. Last thing, the views are amazing! You can see the Needles Mountain range right out dining room windows and Engineer Mountain right out of the living room windows. A great stay!

We had a group of 3 families stay in this home for our Spring Break week in 2025. The property easily fit all of us and was possibly the most well-equipped home that we have ever stayed in. We cooked every night of our stay and had zero issues with needing any utensils or cookware. All the appliances in the home worked as expected. Overall, this was an excellent stay at an excellent place, and I don't think any of us 3 families would hesitate to rent this place again for a future trip.

Where the Pet Friendly Rentals Are
Our pet-friendly properties are not clustered in one place, which matters more in Durango than it would in a beach town — the drive between a downtown cottage and a slopeside townhome is 25 miles. Most sit in and around Durango proper, several are at Purgatory, a few are in the Downtown neighborhood, and the rest are spread out to Hermosa, Hesperus, Silverpick, Electra Lake, Bayfield and Dolores. Pick the location first and the floorplan second.
If you want to be in town, 5th Avenue Cottage sleeps eight in three bedrooms downtown, and Junction House sleeps six in three. If you want the mountain, Modern Mountain Escape is a four-bedroom at Purgatory that sleeps twelve, and Alpenglow, Black Bear Travertine and Sitzmark #1 are townhomes at the resort that all take two dogs. For water, Big Barn and Lemon Lake Log Cabin are on Lemon Reservoir and Spruce Mesa Cabin is up at Electra Lake — the kind of places where the dog can be off the leash on adjacent national forest land rather than pacing a hallway.
Size runs the full range. The smallest are one-bedrooms, including Rio Cabana at 700 square feet and Cottage on the Creek, and three bedrooms is a common layout. At the top end, Durango Valley Retreat and Hacienda House each sleep twelve, and Paradise On Coon Creek is 3,850 square feet on ten. If you need more than that, our large group rentals and entire-house rentals are worth a look, though not all of them accept pets.
Most of these homes were built for the way people actually travel in the San Juans: full kitchens with real counter space, a washer and dryer for muddy paws and wet boots, and a deck or patio to sit out on. Where Your Dog Can Actually Go in Durango
Durango is a genuinely good town to bring a dog to, but the leash rules trip people up. City Code Sec. 4-41 requires a leash of six feet or less in every city park, trail and open space — that includes Horse Gulch, Overend Mountain Park, Dalla Mountain Park and Animas Mountain, all of which get described online as off-leash and are not. The city’s one designated off-leash area is at 21850 Hwy 160 West, at the base of Smelter Mountain, about 12 minutes from downtown; it’s gated, with waste bags and bins on site. On the San Juan National Forest land that surrounds town, dogs are allowed under voice control, which is why the trails outside the city limits are where most locals take their dogs to run.
In town, the Animas River Trail is the easy default: about seven miles of paved path along the Animas River, running the length of town without a single street crossing. Dogs are welcome in the river itself and at Lake Nighthorse — everywhere except the guarded swim beach. For supplies, Pet Haus sits at 1444 Main Avenue, and Dirty Paws Dog Wash at 695 Camino del Rio is a self-serve wash at $10 for ten minutes, though you bring your own towel. Plenty of downtown restaurants seat dogs on the patio.

How much is the pet fee?

We allow up to two dogs per stay, and most of our pet-friendly properties accept two. A few take one dog rather than two: Cottage on the Creek, Evan's House, Hermosa Mountain Hideaway, Pine & Pond Retreat and Tall Pines Casita.

Can I bring a pet to any of your rentals?
No. Authorized pets are only allowed in our designated pet-friendly properties, which are the homes shown in the list on this page. Bringing a pet to a property that is not designated pet-friendly is a violation of the rental agreement.

What are the house rules for pets?
Pets must be supervised at all times, must be crated if left alone in the home, and are not allowed on the furniture or the beds. You are responsible for picking up after your pet on the property and on public land.

Can my dog swim in the Animas River or at Lake Nighthorse?
Yes to both. Dogs are welcome in the Animas River and on the water at Lake Nighthorse, with one exception: they are not permitted at the guarded swim beach. On land they need to be leashed.

Should I leave dog food outside?
No. Durango is bear country and City Ordinance O-2018-6 makes it unlawful to allow wildlife to scatter trash. Keep pet food indoors, use the wildlife-resistant container if the property has one, and clear any scattered trash within 24 hours.

Is A/C available in the units?
Durango sits at 6,512 feet, and summers here are generally warm during the day, often in the 80s, and pleasantly cool at night. Not all properties have A/C, so please check the Amenities tab for your unit's details. Most homes without A/C are stocked with ceiling fans and portable fans to help keep you comfortable.

What is the required deposit to book a home?
To reserve a home, a 50% deposit is required if your arrival date is more than 60 days away. If your reservation is within 60 days, full payment is due at the time of booking.

Where should I go to check in?
You will go directly to the rental home and access it using either a door code or a lockbox. Your guest information sheet, including the property address and access codes, will be emailed to you before arrival. Your balance must be paid in full and your rental agreement signed before check-in instructions are sent. For Tamarron units, check-in is at the front desk, where you will receive your keys.
