Even in a time of little snow, we had a great time in Purgatory! The house itself was nice and newer and had all that we needed. The house was well equipped for cooking meals as there are not many restaurants in the area. The hot tub on the back porch was utilized every night! And the kids loved the ping pong table in the garage. The real star of the show was the shuttle system to and from the mountain! It was so easy to get back and forth.

Where the Four-Bedrooms Are
Most sit in and around Durango proper, with others in the Dalton Ranch golf community north of town, up at Purgatory, and out west in Dolores. In a market where the drive from downtown to the ski hill is 25 miles and about 30 minutes, that split is the first decision to make — the floorplans in this bucket are more alike than the locations are.
In the Durango group, Durango Valley Retreat sleeps twelve across 3,100 square feet on a 1.7-acre lot, with three and a half bathrooms and a private hot tub, and Hacienda House also sleeps twelve — a single-level adobe on a full acre with its own hot tub. Paradise On Coon Creek is the largest of the four-bedrooms at 3,850 square feet, on five acres with a pond and Coon Creek running through the middle. River Run has four acres and 700 feet of private Animas River frontage, two living rooms, air conditioning and a ping-pong table. Animas Montage is the smallest at 1,752 square feet, air-conditioned, ten minutes from downtown. Lemon Lake Log Cabin is the outlier and the entry point: a 100-year-old log cabin on 35 acres above Lemon Reservoir, 25 minutes out, with two living rooms and lake views. Lake Purgatory Family Lodge is 3,300 square feet on 1.3 acres, with national forest on two sides and its listing putting it five minutes from the ski resort.
The homes outside Durango split cleanly. Dalton Family Retreat and Red Cliffs Retreat are both in the Dalton Ranch Golf Club community, ten minutes from downtown and twenty from Purgatory, both air-conditioned, both sleeping eight in three bathrooms — Dalton Family Retreat adds foosball and a ping-pong table, Red Cliffs adds pickleball and a view of the third hole. At the resort, Sitzmark #1 is in the base village with ski-in ski-out access, and Modern Mountain Escape is 2,500 square feet built in 2020 across US-550 from the lifts at 8,900 feet, with a private hot tub, a two-car garage and a fitness room; both are Purgatory properties rather than in-town ones, and that drive matters in winter. The Sanctuary sits outside the Durango area altogether — 3,700 square feet on 35 acres in Dolores.
If four bedrooms turns out not to be enough once the guest list settles, the five-bedroom rentals sleep 10 to 14 and the six-bedroom rentals sleep 14 to 20, while our large vacation rentals and family reunion rentals collect the biggest houses regardless of bedroom count. Going the other way, the three-bedroom rentals are our widest selection at any one bedroom count, and the two-bedroom rentals start lower.

Filling a Week From a Four-Bedroom Base
A house this size usually means one family travelling together rather than two couples splitting a condo, and the week that suits it is one big-ticket day plus a lot of low-effort ones. If the children are twelve or under, Purgatory’s Power Kids programme gives them free unlimited skiing with no purchase required and no blackout dates — with Sitzmark #1 and Modern Mountain Escape both at the resort, that is the single largest cost lever on a winter trip here. In summer the resort sells a single activity ticket at $20 and a five-pack at $49 adult or $39 child. If you are at Dalton Ranch instead, the golf club and its restaurant are a two-minute drive.
The one thing to book before you book anything else is Mesa Verde, 36 miles and 45 minutes out. Every cliff dwelling except Step House needs a timed reservation, tickets release on a rolling 14-day window at 8:00 a.m. Mountain time through Recreation.gov at $8 per person, and capacity is 50 at Cliff Palace and 35 at Balcony House — a party of ten or twelve will not walk up and get in. Balcony House also means a 32-foot ladder and an 18-by-27-inch tunnel, so work out who in the group is actually up for it. For the days in between, the Silverton train round trip is a 9.25-hour day and needs the whole day given to it, the winter Cascade Canyon run is five hours, and there is no cell service in the Animas Canyon on either. In July and August the monsoon gives you sunny mornings and afternoon thunderstorms, so start early and be off the ridges by early afternoon.

Which four-bedroom rentals take dogs?

Pets are $25 per night each, capped at $200 per dog, up to two dogs, and the charge is added to your reservation after you book. Dalton Family Retreat, Lake Purgatory Family Lodge, Red Cliffs Retreat and River Run do not take pets. Some do: Animas Montage, Dalton Family Retreat, Durango Valley Retreat, Hacienda House, Red Cliffs Retreat and River Run. Durango sits at 6,512 feet, so summer days often reach the 80s and nights cool off properly. The rest are stocked with ceiling fans and portable fans instead. Yes. Sitzmark #1 is in the base village with ski-in ski-out access, and Modern Mountain Escape is across US-550 from the resort at 8,900 feet, 24 miles north of downtown, with a free on-demand shuttle to the lifts in winter. Lake Purgatory Family Lodge lists itself as five minutes from the ski resort and 28 miles from downtown. Do I need winter tires to reach these homes?
Plan on it. Colorado's Must Carry law runs 1 September to 31 May regardless of weather and covers all of US-550 and US-160 from Walsenburg to the New Mexico border — which is the road to Purgatory, the road past Dalton Ranch and the road in from the west. Passenger vehicles need at least 3/16-inch tread on all-weather or M+S-rated tires, and the fine is $50 plus surcharge. CDOT can activate the separate Traction Law during storms.

What if we need more than four bedrooms?
The five-bedroom rentals sleep 10 to 14 and the six-bedroom rentals sleep 14 to 20, though none of our six-bedroom homes takes pets. Our large vacation rentals and family reunion rentals pages group the biggest houses together regardless of how the bedrooms are counted.

Can we stay longer than two weeks?
It depends on the property. Animas Montage requires prior approval for any stay longer than 14 days and cannot be booked for one without authorisation, so contact the office before you book that home. For anything longer, our monthly rentals page is the right starting point.

What deposit is required to book?
A 50% deposit is required if your arrival date is more than 60 days away. If your arrival is inside 60 days, payment in full is due at the time of booking.
