What You Need to Know About Ice Fishing in Colorado
Where to Ice Fish
The best lake for ice fishing near Durango is Vallecito Lake, sometimes called Vallecito Reservoir. It’s located about 18 miles out of town. Winter is a truly special time in the area. The lake freezes beautifully, making it perfect for ice fishing. There is a parking fee to fish around the lake and anybody older than 16 will need a Colorado fishing license. If you would like a recent fishing report from the Vallecito Lake Chamber of Commerce, contact them through their website for area fishing information.
What to Bring During Your Adventure
The most obvious answer is a good fishing pole. Other things to bring include your fishing license, the appropriate warm clothing, a packed lunch, bags or coolers to keep the fish in, and (we can’t stress this one enough) sunscreen. Contrary to popular belief, you will still need sunscreen, even in the dead of winter! The ice reflects the sun back at you and you may even be more susceptible to a sunburn.
Enter the Annual Vallecito Lake Ice Fishing Tournament
Since 2015, the Vallecito Sporting and Conservation Association has held an annual ice fishing tournament in late February. There are some big prizes at stake for this tournament! In previous years, there have been three categories for winning fish: the largest pike, largest trout, and the heaviest stringer. All three of these categories are based on the weight of the catch. In past years, first place in each category has awarded $1,000! To encourage new anglers, kids ages five to 12 have received a free fishing start-up kit. This event truly is fun for the whole family!
