The following are a few to be sure to add to your itinerary the next time you’re heading this way in the name of fun.

Trek the Animas Mountain Trail

The spectacular scenery and surrounding mountains that make Durango so appealing are on full display for those who choose to take the time to hike the Animas Mountain trail. This route is designated as moderately difficult and in total, spans 6 miles of terrain. With an elevation gain of just over 1,500 feet, the Animas Mountain Trail loops east of the Animas River and showcases red rocks and the San Juan Mountains alike. It’s easy to access from the heart of town while providing an off-the-beaten bath feel as you trek. It’s an ideal combination that you simply won’t want to miss!

Explore Purgatory Trail

When you’re looking for moderately difficult Durango trails that you can enjoy at your own pace, Purgatory Trail is a good one to add to your lineup. This is an idyllic summer and fall route that’s accessible in the Hermosa Creek Wilderness Area and comes complete with a collection of impressive aspens to line the pathway. This trek covers 2.5 miles of land and enjoys an elevation gain of around 1,820 feet. It’s an inviting out-and-back trail that can be paired with a 9-mile hike to Cascade Canyon if you choose but otherwise offers up spectacular views of Lime Creek and the Animas River canyon as well.

Find Time to Enjoy Falls Creek Trail

For a leisurely trek with amazing cascade views, make sure to make time for the Falls Creek trail. This 4.1-mile loop is a short and sweet outdoor experience, giving hikers a chance to immerse themselves in the beauty of the San Juan National Forest. Along the way, you’ll see plenty of wildflowers to admire, but the highlight is certainly the waterfall.
