Innovation Built on History

Formerly known as The Durango Discovery Museum, the Powerhouse Science Center is located at 1333 Camino del Rio and is open to the public Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. This interactive science center is a fun-for-all-ages stop that’s situated within a space that once functioned as a power plant. The former Durango Light and Power Company building which was constructed in 1892 served as inspiration for the modern museum name!

The Powerhouse Science Center enjoys a location on the banks of the Animas River and is considered Southwest Colorado’s premier interactive science center complete with hands-on learning opportunities. This Durango Science center is open year-round and hosts individual visitors and educational groups alike. On-site guests will find a wide range of exhibits, activities, and programs to check out that are as inspirational as they are educational.

Durango Science Center Mission and Exhibits

Those who visit the Powerhouse Science Center will actively be participating in the center’s overall mission to spark curiosity, ignite imagination, and power exploration. Achieving this means that the Powerhouse Science Center hosts both a permanent collection of displays as well as revolving exhibits to keep learning fresh, innovative, and exciting! Some of the exhibits that have been hosted here include Roots of Wisdom, which explored stories from four indigenous communities in the area. Medieval to Metal was an exhibit that highlighted the transition of art and the guitar alike. Exhibits like Living with Wolves looked at photographs that captured the lives of wolves beyond what we would normally be privy to.

Admission to the Powerhouse Science Center is $9 for adults and $7 for children ages 3 to 17. Children 2 and under can enjoy the science center for free while discounts are available for students, seniors, and military members too. Group visits can be booked in advance when you’re visiting with anywhere from 16 to 30 guests at a time.
