The Animas Museum is located at 3065 West 2nd Avenue in Durango at the corner of 2nd avenue and 31st street. The museum is open to the public Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm as well as Wednesday and Friday from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Admission is donation based and this Durango museum is owned and operated by the La Plata County Historical Society. The museum itself sits within a restored building that served as the Animas City School beginning in 1904. Historical Society directors and staff have worked tirelessly to transform this historic space into the enchanting and informative historical museum it is today!

What to Expect at this Durango Museum When You’re Here

A visit to the Animas Museum is a chance to browse a variety of exhibits and displays that tell the story of Durango in a rich and exciting way. This Durango museum is set up so that visitors feel as if they’re moving through multiple school rooms while transitioning from one display to the next! This pays homage to the museum’s origins as a center of learning. In addition to the museum exhibits and displays, the Animas Museum also functions as a research library. They host a full photo archive and provide access to historical on-site literature year-round upon request. The museum gives guests a chance to walk through a fully restored 1905 classroom and also hosts an exhibit in conjunction with the Smithsonian that looks back on the history and stories related to La Plata County. Once guests have had a chance to browse the displays, they can pick up a map to follow that lays out self-guided walking tours through historic parts of the city to follow up on their learning fun.
