This special trail conveniently runs right through the center of Durango, CO, and is one of the most frequently used paths here.  It was paved back in 1976 and has been serving as an easily accessible course through town ever since.  You can travel this trail either by foot or bike; motorized vehicles are not permitted, creating a quiet and peaceful atmosphere.  The Animas River Trail map shows that this path is 7 miles in length and includes a gravel parking lot on Bennett Road.  Your dogs can accompany you, but they must be leashed at all times and you must clean up after them.

What to See along the Animas River Trail

You’ll be treated to a myriad of beautiful views as you journey along the Animas River Trail.  It passes through several different parks, including the Animas City Park, Rank Park, Schneider Park, Santa Rita Park, Cundiff Park, and Dallabetta Park, as well as five bridges and a few waterfalls.  The Animas River itself is a gorgeous sight to see on this path; during the summer, you’ll see many tubers and kayakers floating along.  This trail also runs alongside the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for a bit, so you might catch a glimpse of this iconic Colorado feature during your adventure down the Animas River Trail.
