All About the Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum

The Southern Ute Museum was designed as a place for fostering understanding of the culture, languages, history and way of life of the Ute Peoples. The center was constructed on the belief that people-to-people relations are improved when understanding is promoted through both effective programming and inclusive events. The vision of the cultural center and museum is to be an internationally-respected destination serving as a model for tribal museums, libraries, and archives across the nation and globe.

What to Explore While You’re Here

A highlight to observe during any visit to the Southern Ute Cultural Center & Museum is the Lummi Nation Bear totem pole located in the welcome gallery. The second floor of the center hosts an additional welcome gallery where guests can find a pictorial journey display featuring Colorado’s longest-continuous residents known as the Ute as they’ve adapted and thrived through the years on the land.

Many of the photographs on display in the gallery date back to the early 20th century and some feature tribal dances, beadwork, and prominent leaders alike. Making your way to the permanent gallery, guests will find photographs, interactive displays, and life-size replicas on-site that showcase tribal apparel and cabins. Tribal traditions, design techniques, and current events are also highlighted in this space.  A visit to the Northeast Hall Alcove reveals displays that focus on Southern Ute veterans while the on-site temporary gallery hosts a revolving lineup of exhibits and displays that are specialized and make every visit unique.
