Durango is a delightful vacation destination for travelers year-round that’s often appealing thanks to its beautiful terrain, wild-west vibes, and opportunities to get into nature. That said, there’s plenty you might not know about Durango that’s sure to surprise you! The following are a few fun Durango facts to add to your list before you next travel this way.

Durango Is a Silver Screen City

When you head to Durango, you’ll in fact be enjoying time in a place that’s hosted Hollywood a time or two over the years. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid was filmed in Durango as was Around The World in Eight Days which was produced in 1956. How the West Was Won used Durango as its backdrop in 1963 before National Lampoon’s Vacation was filmed here in 1983. Next time you watch these films, you can enjoy knowing you’ve shared a space with a few celebrities!

It’s a Place Packed with History

Travelers making their way to Durango who happen to have a passion for history will find that this destination is packed with stories that can still be experienced today. The Diamond Belle Saloon within the historic Strater Hotel is a great example. The hotel dates back over 130 years and the Diamond Belle saloon has preserved a piece of wild west history for visitors immaculately. When you come by for a drink or a bite, you can still see a bullet hole in the wall that was left by a Colt 44 revolver in the hands of an angry patron back at the turn of the century. The history extends beyond Main Avenue when Durango guests set aside time to explore Mesa Verde National Park which was first established as a protected space in 1906. In total, Durango hosts more than 1,000 archeological sites within its city limits for visitors to check out.

The City Is Filled with World-Class Fishing Opportunities

If angling is your hobby, Durango promises to please. The city hosts a two-mile stretch of the Animas River that’s been designated “gold medal” water. This means it possesses the highest quality for large trout fishing and is ideal for lures and flies exclusively.

It’s a Sunnier Place Than You Might Expect

A trip to Durango is likely to be met with sunny skies no matter what time of year you arrive. While temperatures drop in the winter and fresh powder falls, the city still enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year!
