Visit Indian Ruins near Durango, CO
Aztec Ruins National Monument
There is no better place to learn about the Pueblo people than the Aztec Ruins. This national monument is located about one-hour from Durango, but it’s definitely worth the drive. Your visit will start with a 15-minute video, “Aztec Ruins: Footprint of the Past,” which will give you a good overview of the history of the area. Then, you’ll be given the tools to take a self-guided tour. You’ll be able to explore a 900-year old ancestral Pueblo Great House which features over 400 masonry rooms. This archeological site is about a half-mile long so be sure to wear comfortable boots. The Aztec Ruins entrance fee is just $5 per adult. Children ages 16 and younger get in for free! The monument is open every day from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Mesa Verde
Mesa Verde National Park is one of the biggest historical sites in the area, with over 5,000 archeological sites stretched out over more than 40 miles of road! When you arrive at Mesa Verde, stop by the visitor center and purchase your tickets to visit one of the three biggest cliff dwellings in the park: Cliff Palace, Balcony House, and Long House. You’ll also get to see the center’s exhibits, which outline the history of the area and give a small glimpse into the lives of the ancient Puebloan people. If you’d like a more in-depth look at the area’s past, visit the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum. Please note that this is located about 20 miles from the park’s entrance, so be sure to plan ahead if you want to visit.
Most visitors come to the park for the cliff dwellings. If you plan on touring these ancient ruins, be sure to check the schedule to better plan your visit. Most of the ruins are only open during certain months of the year.
