What You Need to Know about the Polar Express in Durango

Every year, one of the trains from Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and Museum is transformed into the famous train from the award-winning book by Chris van Allsburg and the iconic 2003 movie starring Tom Hanks, The Polar Express. The train runs from mid-November to the beginning of January. Make sure to reserve your ticket ahead of time as the rides frequently sell out! Choose from the coach, deluxe, and first class sections. If you have a large group, make sure you book early to guarantee your group stays together.

Take a Trip Through the Winter Wonderland

During the 1½-hour train ride for all ages, you’ll delight in the holiday cheer as you chug through the San Juan mountains en route to the North Pole! Sit back and relax as elves read The Polar Express aloud over the train’s sound system and show pictures from the book in the aisles. Sip hot chocolate, cozy up with loved ones and enjoy the gentle rocking rhythm of the train car.
As you approach the North Pole, the lights in the train begin to dim. Then, Santa makes his grand entrance and passes out small gifts for all those who believe! We bet that you will still be singing the Christmas carols as you exit the train back in Durango. Just be sure to bring your camera so you can relive the memories for years to come.

Ride a Piece of History
